A Histochemical Study of Sex Inversion Produced by Estradiol in Chick Embryos.

چکیده
G O N A D A L inversion produced by sex hormones has been studied by many authors trying to understand sex differentiation and its hormonal control. The work of Dantchakoff (1935), Wolff & Ginglinger (1935) and Willier, Gallagher & Koch (1935), who studied sex inversion in genetically male chick gonads caused by the action of estrogens, as well as work done since then on birds and other vertebrates, dealt with the morphology of inverted gonads, while very few attempts have been made to analyse them functionally. Perhaps the most important work on this aspect has been that of Wolff & Haffen (1961), who demonstrated that inverted chick gonads are capable of producing feminizing substances. It seems well established that hormonal production by normal chick embryonic ovaries is localized in medullary interstitial cells as judged from their high content in lipids and cholesterol (Scheib, 1959; Narbaitz & Sabatini, 1963) and J5-3j8hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (Narbaitz & Kolodny, 1964; Chieffi, Manelli, Botte & Mastrolia, 1964). It appeared to us of interest to know if cells with the same localization and histochemical characteristics are present in inverted gonads. Since at early ages these are undistinguishable from normal ovaries, their study was made possible through the help of simultaneous determination of genetic sex by study of the chromosomes.

متن کاملA Chick Embryo in-Vitro Model of Knee Morphogenesis
Background: In this feasibility study, a mechanically loaded in-vitro tissue culture model of joint morphogenesis using the isolated lower extremity of the 8 day old chick embryo was developed to assess the effects of mechanical loading on joint morphogenesis. Methods: The developed in-vitro system allows controlled flexion and extension of the chick embryonic knee with a range of motion of ...
متن کاملHistochemical study of estradiol valerate-induced polycystic ovary syndrome in the rat
For the present study, and follow-up of histochemical changes in estradiol valerate-induced polycysticovary syndrome (PCOS), 48 virgin 90-day-old female rats were used. The rats were divided into thetreatment and control groups. For each rat of the treatment group, 4 mg estradiol valerate was injectedthrough intramuscular route for the induction of PCOS. The control group was taken the same amo...
متن کاملThe Role of Caspase 9 during Programmed Cell Death in Ciliary Ganglia of Chick Embryos
During programmed cell death (PCD) apoptosis is controlled by many factors such as proteases. With no specific protease (s) known during PCD in the developing nervous system so far, we sought to determine if any specific protease (s) is involved in this process and therefore used different protease inhibitors during PCD (from embryonic day 6 to 10) in chick embryos. Among the inhibitors commerc...

horbar; Ovaries from decapitated, sham-operated and intact 18-day-old chick embryos were cultured in Medium 199 for 6 h, and the amount of 17f3-estradiol released into the culture media was determined by radioimmunoassay. Ovaries from decapitated embryos secreted significantly lower amounts of 17f3-estradiol than those from intact embryos, but there was no difference when they were compared to ...
